1. Desktop
The Desktop is the initial work area of a computer that works under Windows. It is the screen that appears after Windows starts and the user signs in.
Components of Desktop

2. Taskbar
The Taskbar helps users quickly access applications, switch between open windows, and view important system information.
Components of Taskbar

3. Start Menu
The Start menu opens when we click the Start button. It can also be opened using the Windows key on the keyboard.
The Start Menu Contains
- Pinned Applications: Applications that have been pinned for quick access.
- Recent Applications: Applications or items that have been used recently.
- System Settings and Folders: Provides access to Windows Settings and commonly used folders and system features.
4. Window
A window is a rectangular-shaped area used to display the user interface of software or an application.
Parts of a Window

5. Control Buttons
The control buttons allow us to manage the size and state of a window.

| Minimize | Hides the window from the screen while keeping the application open. The application can usually be accessed again from the taskbar. |
| Maximize | Expands the window so that it occupies the available screen area. |
| Restore | Changes a maximized window back to its previous size. |
| Close | Closes the current window or application. |
6. Lab Activity
Activity 1: Open More Than One Window
- Open File Explorer.
- Open another application such as Notepad.
- Observe that both applications are open.
Activity 2: Change Between Opened Windows
- Open two or more applications.
- Click their icons on the taskbar to switch between them.
- You can also use Alt + Tab to switch between open windows.
Activity 3: Use Control Buttons
- Open any application.
- Click Minimize and observe what happens.
- Open the application again from the taskbar.
- Try Maximize/Restore.
- Finally, close the application.
Activity 4: Manually Resize a Window
- Open an application.
- Move the mouse pointer to the edge or corner of the window.
- When the resize pointer appears, drag the edge or corner.
- Observe how the size of the window changes.
Activity 5: Move a Window
- Open an application.
- Place the mouse pointer on its title bar.
- Click and hold the mouse button.
- Drag the window to another location on the desktop.
Activity 6: Minimize All Windows
- Open several windows.
- Use the Show Desktop feature on the taskbar to minimize/hide the open windows.
- Observe the desktop.
Activity 7: Arrange Windows
- Open two or more windows.
- Resize them manually.
- Place them side by side.
- Try Windows’ window-arranging features, such as snapping windows to the sides of the screen.
Activity 8: Restart and Shut Down Windows
- Click the Start button.
- Select the Power option.
- Choose Restart to restart the computer.
- Choose Shut down when you want to turn off the computer.
Activity 9: Open an Application Using Search
- Open the Start menu or search box.
- Type the name of an application, such as Notepad.
- Select the application from the search results.
- Press Enter if appropriate.
Activity 10: Pin an Application
- Search for an application.
- Right-click the application.
- Choose the appropriate option to pin it to the Start menu or Taskbar.
- Verify that the application is now easily accessible.
